Where Florida's grapefruit story begins
In 1842, French settler Odet Philippe established a plantation on Old Tampa Bay in what is now Safety Harbor. He is credited with introducing citrus to the Tampa Bay region and is believed to be the first to cultivate grapefruit in Florida. His former plantation is now Philippe Park.
